WIIC 29th Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow June 5-6, 2010 Treasure Valley, Rutland, MA

Worcester Inter-Tribal Indian Center       Newsletter       March 2009

Hello everyone, we hope you've had a safe and healthy winter. It sure has been a long one. We've been busy behind the scenes planning WIIC's annual Powwow - June 6th & 7th.
Trader invitations have gone out, the park has been reserved. December's ice storm
wreaked havoc out at Rutland State Park cutting off electricity to the park. There is still a possibility that we'll be working without electricity come Powwow.
The flush toilets in the bathrooms and the water supply depend on an electric pump station. F.E.M.A. has come to the park's rescue and will restore power, hopefully by the Powwow.
They are also removing the downed trees and branches.

Our program book for the Powwow is generating much needed income. We have already doubled the sale of Ad space including memorials and personal messages. The deadline for placing Ads is the April meeting (3rd Tuesday in April.) Prices are as follows:

$25.00 per business card size ad
$40.00 for a half page
$75.00 Full Page
$100.00 Half page plus four laminated signs

Ads can be purchased through John "Gentle Hawk" @ 508-754-4994 Checks should be made out to WIIC.

We are excited to tell you that WIIC is working on a new website. Any members with an email address can send it to Gail Emmons at the following address: four_hawks@charter.net. We hope to be able to post our newsletter on it in the near future. This will help cut down the costs of postage. Please be assured that we will not give your email address and will continue to mail out newsletter as needed.

Please try to attend the next two WIIC meetings. We will have the volunteer sign up sheet for the Powwow. To continue making the WIIC Powwow a success we need as many volunteers as possible.

New Fundraiser: Lotto calendar for the month of July offers 31 prizes and 31 chances to win. $5.00 per calendar. Prizes include a state park season pass; cash prizes begin at $20.00 up to $100.00. A maximum of 1,000 calendars will be sold. Winners will be determined by the last 3 digits of the Mass Daily Lottery.

Example: If Tuesday, July 7th Mass Daily Lottery numbers drawn are 3892, calendar number 892 is the winner of $20.00. Each calendar holder is eligible to win all daily prizes listed on the calendar. The calendars are available now for sale. Please contact Gail or Mark Emmons at 508-791-3770. They'll be available at the next two WIIC meetings. We will need everyone's help to make the fundraiser a success.

The Two-Nations Powwow has decided to help our Powwow this year by allowing us to set up a WIIC booth. This will enable us to promote our gathering, sell crafts, and sell our Lotto Calendars. We will also be getting a donation from Two-Nations. We need volunteers for the booth.

Mark Your Calendars: An exciting 5-part series from American Experience entitled "We Will Remain" is coming to PBS (Channel 2) beginning Monday, April 13th at 9:00PM with part one "After the Mayflower". This Promises to be educational and entertaining as it shows historical events from the Native American perspective. David "Tall Pine" White of the Nipmucs appears in this episode as one of king Phillips warriors. David not only appears in the film but teaches his fellow actors the Nipmuc language in preparation for the filming. You may remember that David and his father Ken White have opened our WIIC Powwow with Nipmuc prayers, and of course they are our hosts at the annual Nipmuc Powwow at Lake Slog in September. We are so excited for David and his family. Each episode is 1 1/2 hours long. To see the preview online, go to www.pbs.org/weshallremain.
